What is Community Leadership?

Southland District Council has put together a video to showcase some of the brilliant community leadership programmes happening in their district. I was grateful to be asked to talk about the Future Rakiura community led programme, that I’ve been supporting for the past 18 months.

Community led development is all about communities taking action to progress things they’re passionate about.

Inspiring work, Southland!

Opportunity knocks. Will we do really do things differently?

Collaboration

We’ve all been blown away by COVID-19 and how swiftly a pandemic, along with a whole bunch of new language for us to get used to (Level 4, 3, 2.5, managed isolation etc) and new ways of doing things appeared in our neighbourhoods, cities, towns, regions, the whole country, and the world.

What makes a city, town, village?

I’ve been thinking about this a lot lately and in conversations with some of our region’s leaders, it seems that they have too.

Yes, we need infrastructure.  The sort that gets us from A to B, that connects neighbourhoods and places and that gives us access to the services we say we want and are prepared to pay for – like water and sewer, roads, bridges etc.   It’s an important part of what makes a city, town or village tick, and don’t we know about the disruption that it causes when we don’t have it or need to fix or replace it!

Future Rakiura is born!

The Leadership Academy on Stewart Island was a roaring success!  The 7 inspirational speakers ‘fired’ up the locals to dream and believe in the power of ‘doing’.

Some of what we heard included: –

  • Penny Simmonds Chief Executive of the Southern Institute of Technology reminded us to never be frightened to dream big (she told us how the 0 fees idea was written on the back of a napkin on Stewart Island!) but to always take others with you! She also challenged us to not forget the power of collaboration and to have ‘Yes, and’ and ‘Yes, but’ conversations – to help us think outside the square.

We must do more than put people at the centre following a disaster

The recent commemorations for the 22 February earthquake are always a time for reflection and remembrance for Cantabrians.

It takes us back to that heart-breaking day when so many precious lives were lost, and many others were changed forever. It’s good to remember, to pay our respects, and to stand with the families and friends of those who were affected from our neighbourhoods and much further away.
